Kottayam, 25th January, 2016: Over 600 children from Kottayam and Pathanamthitta turned out for the first Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA Weekend Festival – an extension of the Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA programme, on Tuesday 24th January 2017 at the Girideepam Bethany School Indoor Stadium.
The weekend festival is a basketball skills challenge for kids under 12 years of age. This was one of the 18 events planned across the 11 centres as a part of the programme in India.
The enthusiastic children were introduced by the NBA coaches to five basic basketball skill stations: passing, dribbling, shooting, footwork, and game-play. The camp was led by Associate Vice President Basketball Operations of NBA India Carlos Barroca and Mr. Jedh from USA in two separate sessions.
Kids participated in multiple basketball based skill challenges and acquired points/scores. Each kid received an individual score for their performance in each of their challenges. The top 20 performers based on their scores played a Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA All-Star game and were given NBA merchandise.
This year, the new attractions were:
- Basketball Arcade Concept – Shooting is the most looked-forward to act in basketball game play. This setup enabled children to experience and test their shooting skills. The task of this station was to make maximum points in a minute. Top performers won NBA Merchandise.
- Photo Zone – A panel/backdrop with NBA players and an empty space for people to stand and take photos. Number of props were also provided like player masks, basketballs, beard, glasses etc. that students used while clicking photos.
The festival was free for participants. Boys and girls between the ages of 6-12 years in Kerala will have one more opportunity to take part in a similar festival on January 27th at the Toc-H Public School, Vytilla, Kochi.
