• Three iconic clubs of Malleshwaram: Young Men’s Mandyam Association (YMMA), Bharath Sports Union and Beagles have come together for the first time in history to conduct this Championship. 
  • A special Slam Dunk contest will also be held on 24th January, featuring the best dunkers from Karnataka including current international stars Arvind Arumugam and Anil Kumar BK.

Bengaluru, 22nd January 2017:  Bengaluru is all set to host the 1st Malleshwaram Cup Inter-College Invitational Floodlight Basketball Championship for Men and Women. The Championship will be held at the Bharath Sports Union courts, Malleshwaram grounds between 24th to 29th January.

The Championship is being organised by Dr CN Ashwathnarayan Foundation in association with Atsiy! Sports and Malleshwaram’s three iconic clubs YMMA, Beagles and Bharath Sports Union.

At a press meet held earlier this evening at the Malleshwaram Association Club (Soundarya Hall), it was also announced that an exciting Slam Dunk contest will be held on the opening day (24th Jan).

The press meet witnessed the presence of Dr CN Ashwathnarayan, MLA (Malleshwaram Constituency), as well as the coming together of numerous former international basketball stars hailing from Malleshwaram (including Olympian G Dilip) who conveyed their best wishes to the successful conduct of the Championship.

The Malleshwaram Cup trophy was unveiled in the presence of the captains of all the participating men and women college teams. Shri Prakash Padukone, legendary former Indian badminton star, will be the chief guest for the inaugural day (24th Jan) and Shri K Govindaraj, President of the Karnataka Olympic Association and President of the Basketball Federation of India will be the chief guest for the finals (on 29th January).

WOMEN:  Jain University, St. Joseph’s Commerce College, Mount Carmel College, RV College of Engineering, BMS College of Engineering, Sindhi PU College

Slam Dunk contestants: Arvind Arumugam, Anil BK, Roby Thomas, Naveen Raj, Sowkin Shetty (all from Vijaya Bank), Rahul S Gowda, Akhil Ubhayakar (St. Joseph’s Commerce College), Michael Raj (Christ), Denzil Vas (Southern Blues), Bhooshan (Army Service Centre), Abhishek Ramachandran (National Games Village), Chetan Suresh (Beagles), Kaif Zia (Jayanagar Sports Club), Pratyansh Tomar (Young Men Mandyam Association)

Another notable highlight of the press meet included a curtain raiser video chronicling Malleshwaram’s unique and proud basketball legacy stretching over many decades from the 1950s to present.

Finally, the new Malleshwaram Cup tournament website (www.malleshwaramcup.com) was launched by Mr MA Parthsarathy, former international basketball player.
