Pathanamthitta, 21st January 2017: Kerala Hoopathon, a mega event across the state to celebrate the 125th jubilee of the game of basketball, was conducted on a grand scale with participation from all major districts of Kerala. More than 12,500 beginners (children below 12 years) attempted to score 1,25,000 points with the support of around 1250 school players across 125 courts in the state. The idea was to introduce young children to the game by giving them a feel of scoring points on the basketball court.

The event was organised by Team Rebound & the Kerala Basketball Association. Former India international and 1970 Arjuna awardee Abbas Moontasir, well known for his on-court swank during his playing days, was the chief guest for the state-wide inauguration of the one day event held at the Global Public School, Kochi. Several Indian stars including Unwin Antony, C. V. Sunny, Leelamma Thomas, Iqbal and the top basketball players from all over the state were part of the event at various locations across Kerala.

The target of the Kerala Hoopathon was to score 1,25,000 points. During the 1 hour session, the children ended up exceeding the expectations of the organizers and tallying a grand total of 1,31,060 points.  Ernakulam topped the Hoopathon scoring spree with 55,130 points while Trivandrum was second with 31,254 points and Kottayam was third with 15,310 points. Other major districts included Pathanamthitta with 13,724 points, Alleppey with 12,746 points and Idukki with 2,576 points.

In Trivandrum, the event was organized jointly with the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs and was inaugurated by Sanjayan Kumar IFS, Director of Sports & Secretary, KSSC. Other dignitaries included Archbishop Thomas Mar Koorilos (Pathanamthitta), veteran basketball player Thomas J Fenn (Alleppey), former Kerala captain Jose Kurien (Kottayam).

Among the top school scores in each district, The Delta Study Fort Kochi (Ernakulam) top scored with 6,592 points; St Joseph’s Higher Secondary School (Trivandrum) top scored with 4,632 points; Lourdes Public School & Junior College (Kottayam) top scored with 2,456 points; Christ Central School, Thiruvalla (Pathanamthitta) top scored with 2,586 points; SDV English Medium HSS (Alleppey) top scored with 1,620 points; Shanthal Jyothi Public School, Muttom (Idukki) top scored with 1,070 points.

The Kerala Hoopathon was supported by H&C, Njuze, POPY, ACC, HDFC Bank, SAI-LNCPE & the Directorate of Sports, Govt of Kerala.
