Puducherry, 10th January 2017: The 67th Senior National Basketball Championship marched on to Day 4 with a slate on interesting matchups on the cards. To begin the day, defending champions Indian Railways women continued their unbeaten run with a drubbing of the Punjab team. Guard Madhu Kumari led the way with 26 points, as Railways strolled to a 93-33 victory.
The Telangana women also maintained their winning ways with a comfortable triumph against Maharashtra (61-42). Their versatile core lineup all contributed in double digits, as they led from start to finish. Karnataka women improved to 2-0 this tournament with a 70-43 victory against Haryana. Karnataka’s international player Bhandavya Gowda top scored with 27 points.

In the Level 1 men’s games, last year’s finalists Uttarakhand stamped their class in their win against Chhattisgarh. After beginning with a 17-0 start, Uttarakhand were on automatic the rest of the way as they sauntered to a 65-36 win. Superstar Vishesh Bhriguvanshi scored a game-high 21 points, which included a spectacular baseline alley-oop dunk.
In the second half of the day, the Delhi women bounced back with a resounding win after consecutive losses thus far in the tournament. With four scorers in double digits, Delhi blew out Rajasthan for an 82-40 win. The other level 2 women’s team to look out for is Karnataka, who won their third straight game today, beating Uttarakhand 55-11. The Madhya Pradesh women have also moved closer to qualifying to Level 1 with a thrilling 69-68 win against Uttar Pradesh. Southpaw Sakshi Pandey top scored for MP with 22 points.
Home team Puducherry men fell to Bihar (53-39), who were led by point guard and IMG Academy product Sanjeev Kumar’s 23 points. The Rajasthan men won a nail-biter against Delhi with an 88-86, in a game that was decided in extra time. Delhi’s young stars Rachit (22 points) and Vishal (24 points) were bright sparks for their team today, but Rajasthan edged past Delhi, outscoring them 11 to 9 in the extra time period.

The clash of heavyweights in men’s Group B saw Tamil Nadu winning the battle against Indian Railways 80 to 62. Tamil Nadu’s big three of Akilan Pari (18 points), Rikin Pethani (19 points) and Prasanna Venkatesh (13 points) led the way in a composed effort. Railways big man Palpreet Singh managed to put in 19 points in a losing effort.
Late yesterday evening, the Indian Railways men won their second game of the tournament and remained undefeated with a 83-61 win against Gujarat. Railways’ Palpreet Singh put his improvement on display pouring in 29 points. The Delhi men moved closer to upgrading to Level 1 as they put aside Chandigarh 75-36, led by their young stars Rachit (18 points) and Vishal Gupta (12 points).
