Kozhikode, 20th October, 2016: The Group C Girls matches at the Indian School Basketball League concluded with Providence being declared the winners.
The Indian School Basketball League (ISBL) is an effort to lift basketball up from the grass-roots, and is being organized by the Basketball Federation of India in collaboration with Kerala Basketball Association.
The stated idea is to create a structured, self-sustaining, pan-India, school league which will serve as a platform to increase the participation in organised basketball, and subsequently will work as the talent development/feeder system for the Indian national teams.
Apart from Kerala, 15 other States are participating in the league. These include: Punjab, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, West Bengal, Gujarat, Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Mizoram.
In Kerala, the preliminary rounds of the ISBL are being played at five centers Kochi, Koratty, Kottayam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikde. They are being played in a round robin format, in which the sixteen (16) teams; 4 each in boys and girls are divided into four (4) groups of four (4) teams in five centers . Every team will take on its three (3) opponents twice in its respective group. 2 teams from each group will advance to the final which will be played at Kottayam. The State finals will be played in a knockout format.
The Regional Matches of group C, at Kozhikode (Girls) and Ernakulum (Boys) of the ISBL Group C were concluded at Manchira Maidan in Kozhikode and Sacred Heart CMI school, Thevara in a similar fashion.
In Kozhikode, Providence defeated St Michaels 64-56 in their second spell matches making a double tie between St. Michaels. Providence and St. Michaels (the runner up) have both qualified to participate in the State Finals to be held at Kottayam in November.
Earlier in Group C Boys at Kochi, St. Joseph’s HSS, Pulincunnoo and Sacred Hear CMI Public School, Thevara, and at Thiruvananthapuram, St. Joseph’s HSS, Thriuvananthapuram and St. Thomas HSS Kozhencherry and St . Ephremes HSS, Mannanam and Girideepam Bethanny from Kottayam have found their way to the State Finals.
In the Girls category, St. Michael’s and Providence from Kottayam, Girideepam Bethany and Mount Carmel, Kottayam, and at Tiruvananthapuram, St. Goretti’s Nalanchira and St. Joseph’s GHS, Alapuzha have confirmed their place in the finals.
