The News 9 basketball panel discussion with the Indian senior men’s team is out on YouTube. They called Joginder, “Narender”, and Akhilan as “Akhilam”, but all said and done, glad to have the Indian basketball men’s team on television.
The panel featured BFI Head of Operations Himamshu Dabir, point guards Joginder Singh Saharan, Akilan Pari, small forward Narender Grewal, and forwards Arvind A and Rikin Pethani. The panelists spoke about their own personal journeys, the growth of basketball in India, the impact of Satnam Singh’s NBA entry, and debunked stereotypes that basketball is only a tall person’s game. The interview was conducted on the sidelines of the 4th South Asian Basketball Championship (SABA) 2015 that was held last week in Bengaluru. India reclaimed gold easily, and in the process qualifying for the FIBA Asia Championship to be held in China later this September.
The highlight for us was Narender Grewal’s “bhais ka dhoodh piya hai” (“we drink buffalo’s milk”, when asked about his “special diet”), #Karnataka lad Arvind getting multiple phone calls from his childhood friends & relatives from Mandya, and Joginder Singh Saharan spinning the ball on his finger. Another quote worth mentioning is Arvind’s classic “I’m from Mandya but now playing for India!”
