Mumbai, May 22: Mumbai North waged a grim battle for supremacy with Satara before clinching a close 41-38 victory in a pulsating girl’s league match of the of the 32nd Maharashtra State Inter-District Youth (boys & girls) Basketball Championship, organised by the Maharashtra State Basketball Association (MSBA) and played at the Indian Gymkhana and Police Gymkhana courts, on Friday.
Both Mumbai North and Satara girl’s matched each other move for move and the scores ran close throughout with the Mumbai side enjoying a 21-14 half-time lead. Shreema Shetty led Mumbai’s charge scoring 20 points, while teammates Diskha Kawad and Priti Yadav both scored 6 useful points each which helped in the win. Inspiring Satara’s fight was Rutuja Pawar who finished with 21 points and Priyanka Bhoite with 11 points.
In another well-contested girl’s match, Nagpur overcame a strong challenge from Amravati pulling off a 46-30 victory after marginally leading 20-19 at the break. Nagpur’s top scorer was Shreya Dandekar with 16 points and Rasika Pande 10 points, while Siddha Deshmukh 7 and Rucha A. 6 contributed towards the win. For the Amravati girl’s Vaidehi B scored 12 points and Sukhada and Vedanti chipped in with 5 points each.
In boy’s action, Solapur produced a strong second half performance as they rallied to down Sindhudurg 35-30. Solapur who trailed 12-15 at the end of the first half, recovered well with Sanket Joshi (12 points) and Yash Jadhav (11) ensuring they finished ahead of their opponents Sindhudurg. Swapnil Malvankar (18) and Sarvesh Hadkar (7) were the main scorers for the losing side.
