MSRIT women’s basketball team from Bengaluru has won the VTU College Championship 2015. The tournament was held at the BLDE College, Bijapur, Karnataka on 28-29th April. Top teams affiliated to VTU, from all over from Karnataka, participated in this floodlit event. Keerthi top scored for the winners with 12 points, in a relatively low scoring final game.
This has been a trophy filled season for the MSRIT men’s and women’s team. A few months ago, the women’s team emerged champions in the Revels Cup hosted by MIT, Manipal. The men’s team is the reigning champions in the REVA University tournament. Prior to that, the team clinched the first place in the VTU Central Zone event. Last year, the men’s team also won their home fest as well as the college fest hosted by city rivals RV College of Engineering.
The MSRIT team is coached by Sachin Belvadi, a former Indian international coach, who has also been conferred numerous awards by the Karnataka State Government for his contribution towards the development of the sport. The team regularly does well in state level college tournaments and features numerous junior Karnataka men and women players (currently centre Sowkin Shetty from Mangalore plays on the men’s team).
