Titles for Kozhikode and Kottayam
Kozhikode Girls
Babykutty: Kozhikode Girls and Kottayam Boys have won the 42nd Kerala Sub Junior Basketball championship beating Thiruvananthapuram in both the finals. The tournament for U13 boys and girls was held from 13th to 17th May at the St Johns School’s floodlit basketball court in Anchal.
Kottayam Boys
In the girls’ section, Shilpa was the top scorer for Kozhikode with 19 followed by Manniya Jacob with 17 points. In the boys section, a collective effort from Kottayam dethroned the defending champion Kozhikode in the Quarter final and then defeated Thiruvananthapuram 53-38 in the finals. For Kottayam, Jaison Prince was the top scorer with 15 points followed by Akhil Michael and Aaron Varghese making 10 points each. Pranav Prince was the top scorer for Thiruvananthapuram with 23 points.
Joint Winners for Bronze
Ernakulum and Kottayam in the girls division, and Ernakulum and Idukki in the boys division were declared as joint Bronze medal winners, as heavy rains washed out these morning matches.
Promising Player Award Girls to Gouwri from Thriuvananthapuram.
Gouri S Nair from and Hari Govind, both from Thiruvanthapuram, grabbed the championship’s promising player awards. The Best Player award instituted by Dr John M Chacko, Chief Patron of Kerala Basketball Association went to Jaison Prince of Kottayam and Anagha G Nair from Kottayam.
Prizes and mementos were distributed by Manohara Kumar, President KBA, PP Varghese Secretary, KBA and P J Sunny, Chairman Selection Committee.
Sreekala R Honoured
Special Cash Award to Sreekala R from her mentor Fr Justin.
The mentor of player Sreekala R, Fr Justin, who was instrumental in organising this Championship at Anchal, honoured Sreekala with a cash award at the closing function. Sreekala had grabbed the Most Valuable Player in the Reliance foundation Elite Camp in Noida recently and was also instrumental in bringing the National Title to Kerala in last year’s Sub Jr Nationals at Nasik, whereto she was the MVP.
