S B College, the Senior Men’s Champions

Babykutty: The third edition of the Cochin Shipyard Kerala State 3 on 3 Senior and Jr Basketball Championship, organised by Alapuzha District Basketball Association under the auspices of Kerala Basketball Association at the Municipal Stadium, Alapuzha.

In a final where all professionals sides failed, S B College Changancherry through a last second shot by Robin beat Mar Baselios College of Engineering Thiruvananthapuram 21-20. In the women’s final the two sides from Assumption College fought each other with Assumption ‘B’, the younger lot, taking the title with a 6-5 win.

In the Jr Men Division, Kottayam boys took the title defeating Ernakulum 21-15 while Kollam Girls, featuring players from their Sports Hostel, took the crown defeating Kozhikode 15-12.

Earlier, in the men’s semi-final matches, Mar Baselios College of Engineering beat KSEB Blue (14-10) while S B College Changancherry bt Kerala Police (21-14) to force the exit of the two professional sides from the championship.

In the women semi-final games, Assumption teams A and B made their entry into the final by beating St Josephs College from Irinjalakuda (9-6) and Kerala Police (14-11) respectively.

In the Junior Men’s semi-finals,  Ernakulum bt Idukki (20-13) while Kottayam overcame Trivandrum (18-12), while in the women Kozhikode and Kollam entered the finale as top placed sides at the end of the 5 team round robin league.

Third Place for Kerala Police Teams

Kerala Police men and women had to be satisfied with the Bronze medals as they beat KSEB men in an extra time thriller with the score 15-13, while its women scraped past St Josephs College Irinjalakuda 10-9.

In the men’s division the winners and runners up received trophies and cash awards instituted in memory of PO Philip, former President of Kerala Basketball Association. The women’s awards were in the memory of Kalletharayil KM Chacko instituted by Dr John M Chacko, Chief Patron of KBA, while the cash awards and trophies for Jr Men and Jr Women were handed out in the memory of K K John, former Chairman of Technical Committee, KBA  These were distributed by Shri Thomas Issac MLA Alapuzha.

The function also honoured Shri Thomas J Fenn, International Coach and Referee for his service in basketball and Motty Philip, the General Convener of the Championship for the successful conduct of the Championship.
