Kerala (in white) vs Chhattisgarh match in progress.

The last day of league action from the basketball event at the 35th National Games 2015 concluded earlier this evening at Mundayad Indoor Stadium, Kannur. In the men’s section Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand (Pool A), Services and Karnataka (Pool B) are through to the semis, while in the women’s section Kerala, Tamil Nadu (Pool A), Maharashtra and Karnataka (Pool B) will progress to the final four.

In a deciding encounter, Karnataka women breezed past Punjab 77-49, while their male counterparts condemned Haryana to its third straight loss. Captain Aravind A for Karnataka led from the front with a huge double double effort of 25 points and 21 rebounds.

The match of the evening, no doubt was played by Kerala women against Chhattisgarh. Having lost earlier to Tamil Nadu, two time reigning senior national champions Chhattisgarh was in a must win situation against the host team.  However, from the get go, Kerala raced away to a double digit lead in the first quarter, and defensively Stephy Nixon continued to torment Chhattisgarh’s near 7 footer Poonam Chaturvedi. The final scoreline read 76-46 in favour of the team from the South which has progressed to the semifinals as the top seeded team from Pool A.

In other matches, Uttarakhand men, Tamil Nadu women and Maharashtra women made short work of bottom placed teams Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi respectively. Servicemen too are through to the semis after beating Punjab 94-69 thanks to an all-round effort with multiple players scoring in double digits.
