Mumbai, January 12: Maharashtra earned their maiden win as they recorded a 76-65 win against Punjab in a men’s group-B league match of the Rs 5 lakh prize fund 10th Savio Cup All-India Basketball Tournament for men and women, sponsored by United Phosphorous and co-sponsored by Tridhaatu Realty Infra, at the Don Bosco High School basketball court, Matunga, on Monday evening. The Maharashtrians turned over a 14-17 deficit in the first quarter to snatch a slender 27-26 lead at the end of the first half.
Siddhant Shine with 20 points top-scored for Maharashtra and Amit Gahlot chipped in with 17 points while for the Punjab side Palpreet Singh scored 25 points and Gurinder Singh 14. This was the second successive defeat for Punjab.
Meanwhile, Bhavnagar Youngsters made a dream debut, by upsetting the applecart of fancied Punjab 66-56 in a Men’s Group-B League match played under floodlights late Sunday evening.
The young side from the state of Gujarat, got off to a rollicking start against the Punjabis, who arrived in Mumbai only on Sunday morning, by opening up a 20-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Bhavnagar team maintained their in the remaining three quarters to complete a deserving win.
Results: Men’s league (Group-B): Bhavnagar Youngsters 66 (Harpal Singh 22) beat Punjab 56 (Gurjinder Singh 16). Half-time: 31-24.
