Mumbai, January 11: Defending champions ONGC (Oil & Natural Gas Corporation) warmed up nicely, recording a 63-59 victory against a spirited Maharashtra in the opening men’s league match of the the Rs 5 lakh prize fund 10th Savio Cup All-India Basketball Tournament for men and women, sponsored by United Phosphorous and co-sponsored by Tridhaatu Realty Infra, at the Don Bosco High School basketball court, Matunga, on Sunday evening.

Seasoned Trideep Rai (16 points) and Anoop M. (15) played key roles for ONGC while Maharashtra’s Siddhant Shinde and Amit Gahlot, both scored 12 points each.

ONGC started cautiously against the Maharashtra outfit who put up a good showing with some quick breaks and tight defending at the start and did well to finish the first quarter on level terms at 18-all.

However, the formidable ONGC outfit comprising of international players in their ranks gradually took control to wrest the initiative to take the lead and were well placed at 49-28 at the end of the first half.
