Continuing with their efforts to provide the city’s basketball fans an opportunity to watch the country’s best players in action, the Don Bosco Recreation Centre of Don Bosco High School, Matunga will be organising the Rs 5 lakh prize fund 10th Savio Cup Basketball Tournament for men and women, sponsored by United Phosphorous and co-sponsored by Tridhaatu Realty Infra at their basketball court from January 11 to 18, 2014.
The Savio Cup Basketball Tournament is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the basketball calendar and attracts the cream of basketball teams from all over India as well as a galaxy of International stars.
Top National teams comprising a host of international basketball stars shall be the star attraction as they add tremendous competitive flavor to the event. The formidable teams vying for the Savio Cup in the Men’s category include ONGC, Indian Railways, Maharashtra, Indian Overseas Bank [Chennai], Punjab, Services and Bhavnagar Youngsters.
The four-team women’s category includes Southern Railway, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh and Punjab.
As always, the competition shall feature a host of International and National stars including Vishesh Bhriguvanshi, Amritpal Singh, Riyazuddin and Yadwinder from ONGC, Geetu Anna Jose and Anitha Pauldurai from Southern Railway, Anju Lakra from Chattisgarh, Amjyot Singh from IOB Tamil Nadu, as well as some rising stars from Maharashtra.
The men’s teams will be divided into 2 pools and the top two teams will qualify for the semi-final Super League. The top 2 teams in the Super league will play the final.
There will be only one pool for the women’s teams, with the top two qualifying for the final.
The tournament will be played under floodlights in a temporary erected stadium having seating capacity of approximately 2500. Admission to the tournament is free, promote and popularize the game amongst youngsters.
A part of the proceeds, amounting to Rs. 3 lakhs will be donated to the Don Bosco Night Study School by the organizers of the tournament as social commitment towards a charitable and noble cause.
