Babykutty, Kochi: The five day FIBA Level 1 Certification Course was inaugurated here at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Kochi by the Regional Sports Center Secretary and Former Deputy Commissioner Customs Sri SAS Navas, IRS.  The course, organized by Basketball Federation of India along with Kerala Basketball Association, will end on 10 December 2014. This will be the first time that FIBA is conducting a course in Kerala.

Nelson Isley from FIBA, a coaching expert renowned instructor, will put 32 coaches through their paces in a beginners course (Level 1) to help promote youth basketball in the country as well as in Kerala. The clinic is being supported by the current FIBA level Coaches from Kerala P J Sebastian and PC Antony. FIBA is the independent, international association that governs the game of basketball around the world. It is the only basketball body recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The prominent coaches attending includes current Senior Indian Coach Prasad from ASC Bangalore and Former Indian Captain C V Sunny from Chennai (Indian Bank). 18 other coaches from Kerala too will benefit from this 5 day certification course that combines on-court practical sessions and theoretical sessions. Demonstrations involving players (between the ages of 18 and 28) will help the expert highlight the theories taught throughout the course.

It is noted that as per FIBA guidelines starting in 2016 or 2017, no coach will be given a FIBA coaching license without at least passing a level 2 course. In other words, it will become mandatory to hold a FIBA Coaching License in order to coach at the international level.
