-City Championship culmination of the Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA Program in the City-
-More than 130 Schools and 1 lakh Youth Participated in the Program in Kerala-
Babykutty, Kochi: The Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA program has received an immense response in Kochi with spirited participation of 1000 children and active support of schools and parents. The presence of Carlos Barroca, Senior Director, NBA operations in India along with Coaches Joan Roacha from Portugal and Sudney Hydel from USA is a great inspiration for the fervent young fervent players from schools across Kochi and Kottayam. The programme will conclude on Friday, the 28th of November 2014, at the Rajagiri School in Kalamassery, in the city.
More than 130 schools and 1 lakh youth have participated in the Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA program since it began in October in Kochi and Kotayyam. The Championship will mark the culmination of three competitions that have been taking place across the city.
There will be the finals of the 5×5 team competition with St Ephhremes, Mannanam taking on the CMI Public school Thevara in the boys final, while in girls, Mount Carmel HSS Kottayam will take on Little Flower HSS Koratty.
In the girls semi finals, Mount Carmel GHS Kottayam beat St Joseph’s GHS Alapuzha (25-20) while Little Flower HSS Koratty beat St Thomas GHS Perumannur (24-16), while in boys St Ephremes Mannanam beat Christ School Thiruvalla (36-16) and Sacred Heart CMI Public School had a win over Little Flower HSs Koratty (27-20) to reach the final.
The Boys and girls 3 on 3 competitions will feature finals in both the under 13 and under 16 divisions, as well as the finals of the Hot Shot individual shooting competition, where 60 have qualified from the 500 participants in under 10, under 13 and under 16 categories, which will see one boy and girl crowned as the best shooters in the city.
The Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA program has featured more than 5,000 in-school basketball sessions along with 3 Elite basketball Camps which have provided youth the opportunity to learn from four NBA-supplied certified international coaches who have overseen the program, trained local coaches and conducted clinics.
Additionally, the program offered training to over 150 physical education instructors/coaches and more than 130 schools were provided with resources to promote participation and a healthy, active lifestyle. NBA-supplied coaches trained these local coaches and each received a ‘Basketball in a Bag,’ which contained a localized coaching guide, cones, whistles, posters, and an air pump. In addition, more than 2,000 basketballs were provided to participating schools in order to give youth an opportunity to learn and enjoy the game of basketball.
