  • The school league comes to Chennai from October 20, 2014
  • Matches to be played at two venues, i.e. St. Peter’s School, Royapuram and PAK Palaniswamy, Old Washermanpet

Chennai, October 19, 2014: Basketball Federation of India (BFI) in collaboration with IMG Reliance (IMG R) recently launched the Indian School Basketball League (ISBL) and Indian College Basketball League (ICBL). Through this joint initiative, BFI and IMG R have undertaken the challenge to inculcate the basic knowledge of the game of basketball at grassroots levels and cultivate the talent into national standards.

ICBL and ISBL commenced in Delhi and Indore and after a series of successful matches in cities like Dehradun, Raipur, Hyderabad and Mumbai, Indian School Basketball League will tipoff in Chennai on Oct 20, 2014. In Chennai, the matches will be played at PAK Palaniswamy, Old Washermanpet and St. Peter’s School, Royapuram from 4:00 PM onwards.

Speaking about the progress of the leagues, Mrs. Roopam Harish Sharma, Chief Executive Officer, Basketball Federation of India, said, “Chennai is one of the hotbeds of basketball in India. The state team recently won the Youth Nationals, in both boys and girls category, is an ample proof of the same. We are looking forward to an exciting display of matches as ISBL takes off in Chennai.”

Mr. Ashu Jindal, COO, IMG Reliance, said, “India is witnessing a brilliant revolution in the world of sports and the second most popular sport in the world- Basketball deserves its share of push. At IMG Reliance, we have signed a 30-year partnership with the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) to develop basketball in the country.”

Adding further, Mr. Jindal said, “These two leagues are being played across 22 cities, designed to provide the youth a platform on pan-India basis. Chennai joins the league starting October 20th and we are looking forward to witness the performance of the city which has produced the 2014 national youth champions.”

Comprising over 450 colleges and 6000 participants, the ICBL is the premier college sporting competition in the nation. The city champions from the ICBL’s Premier League will participate in a National Championship to be held in December 2014 in New Delhi.
