Reliance Foundation and the National Basketball Association (NBA) which announced a multi year partnership to launch a comprehensive school-based youth basketball program in India will be back to Kerala this year on September 22nd
Baby Kutty, Press Release, Kochi: This year the Reliance Jr NBA programme is coming to 175 schools: 125 schools from Ernakulum and Kottayam and another 50 more outside, which is an increase of 75 more schools than last year. The programme will run from Sept 22nd to November 29th 2014, as announced at the Principals meet at Kadavanthara Indoor Stadium and Kottayam Girideepam by Akshay Kotenkar, Senior Coordinator NBA India, who was here to explain this year’s program.
In the first year, the Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA program had taught basketball to more than 80,000 youth and trained 100 coaches and physical education instructors to implement a turnkey NBA curriculum.
Reliance Foundation and the NBA had brought 4 international coaches to Kerala for three months last year and conducted ‘Train the Trainer’ seminars that taught the curriculum to local coaches and physical education teachers.
All these trainee coaches had received a ‘Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA Basketball in a Bag,’ which contained resources for them to grow the game in their communities. The bag includes an India-specific coaching guide with curriculum for in-school and after-school programs, nets, whistles, cones, airpumps and a Jr. NBA poster.
Last year’s programme was conducted in 100 schools over Kottayam and Ernakulum along with the local coaches in classes for grades 4-10 in their schools, which concluded with the city competitions and a Jr. NBA Hot Shot Competition which identified the best shooters as well as competitions in 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 categories. The presence of NBA legend Muggsy Bogues added colour to the grand finale last year.
