An untroubled India breezed past its neighbours Bangladesh to record its first win of the SABA Qualifiers 2014 for U-18 Men that is underway at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium, Bengaluru. After today’s second straight loss, Bangladesh is knocked out of the three team competition, having earlier fallen to Sri Lanka in the previous game.
Captain Gurvinder Singh Gill, playing at the centre position, topscored for India with 18 points and was ably supported by guard Mahipal Singh’s 16 points. For Bangladesh, Munim was the lone scorer in double digits, but his 11 points could do little to prevent his side’s 68 point drubbing at the hands of the defending champions.
“We took it a little easy today knowing that our opponents are the weakest team in the tournament. We will continue to rotate and play all twelve of our players even in tomorrow’s match against Sri Lanka,” said India’s Head Coach Jora Singh.
“Our youth (u-16) team is comparatively much stronger. At the u-18 level however, many of our main players can’t participate because they go abroad for their higher studies. In our first match (against Sri Lanka) we struggled against their full court defense, but today I thought our boys performed better,” said Bangladesh Head Coach Mohd Rahman, explaining his team’s mediocre performance in these qualifiers.
India (Gurvinder Gill 18, Mahipal Singh 16) bt Bangladesh (Munim 11) 98-30 [HT: 62-12]
Tomorrow’s Schedule (7/7/14)
6:00 PM India vs Sri Lanka at Koramangala Indoor Stadium, Bengaluru
