Women’s league match between Beagles (in purple) and Appaiah BBC tips off. Beagles would win 39-22.

The Jayanagar Sports Club State Level Basketball Championship for Men and Women 2014 has tipped off at the Madhavan Park courts in Jayanagar. In the first round of morning league matches, Rajkumar Basketball Club stunned the seasoned BSNL squad 69-57. Showcasing some excellent teamplay, multiple Rajkumar players scored in double digits to put it past a surprisingly sluggish BSNL side.

The two Beagles teams have also registered easy opening league wins. The Beagles men’s team made good use of their athletic foreign players to beat YMMA 61-43. Their women counterparts overwhelmed Appaiah Basketball Club 39-22. In the third men’s match of the morning, Corps of Military Police (CMP), led by top scorer Hrishikesh’s 28 points, beat Creative Basketball Club 87-42. In this one sided match, CMP led by as many as 33 points at halftime.

The evening matches and opening ceremony were delayed by over an hour due to rains. Unfortunately, the opening ceremony, which was to be attended by dignitaries such as Shri Vijayakumar, MLA (Jayanagar Constituency) and Shri K Govindraj, President of the Karnataka Olympic Association, was called off. Instead of a proper opening ceremony, the host PPC team and their opponents Young Orions stood in respectful silence as Mrs Sarojamma Manjunath, the wife of the late Shri Manjunath, lit the welcome diyas. The late Shri Manjunath is revered as the founding father of the JSC basketball programme since its inception way back in 1977. Also in attendance as a guest was Dr Lakshmi from the Garden City Hospital.

The evening matches saw hosts JSC pull to a convincing win over BOSCH. Kaif Zia top scored for the winners with 18 points that included a buzzer beater three pointer from almost halfcourt at the end of the second quarter. In other men’s matches, Young Orions, HAL and favourites Vijaya Bank also registered opening day wins. In the only women’s match of the evening, IBBC beat BGVBC 27-18 despite trailing 9-10 at halftime.
