Mumbai: To nobody’s surprise, reigning junior national champions Chhattisgarh women clinched the title at the 2nd Kaustubh Memorial All India Junior Basketball Tournament ’14 that concluded at the Fr Agnel Sports Complex in Vashi, Navi Mumbai. Chhattisgarh women prevailed despite their opponent Maharashtra’s Sruthi Menon scoring 39 points for her side in the losing effort. Chhattisgarh’s 6ft 9 inch centre Poonam Chaturvedi top scored with 45 points to continue her dominant run at the Junior level. What makes her performance noteworthy is that just last month after the conclusion of the 64th Senior National Basketball Championship, Poonam was diagnosed with a mild form of brain tumour.
In the men’s section, Tamil Nadu exacted revenge over the Maharashtra hometeam after losing to them in the earlier league stages. TN’s Rajan top scored with 27 points.
