Punjab vs Rajasthan men’s match tips off.

The 17th All India Advani Memorial Basketball Tournament (AIAMBT) saw an action packed day with as many as six matches being played, apart from a three point shoot out competition to boot.

In the first evening game, ONGC put away the meek challenge posed by South Central Railway Secunderabad. ONGC’s 7ft centre Amrit Pal Singh (or “Amrit Mann”) had as many as six thunderous dunks in the match.  Punjab too advanced to the semis after winning its final league game despite a spirited challenge put up by home team Rajasthan state.

In the most awaited match of the evening, for reasons more than one, Delhi women lost to Southern Railway after staying in the hunt for the first three quarters. A sizeable crowd of MNIT students had gathered to watch the glamourous ‘Singh Sisters’ in action, and they were not disappointed as four of the sisters led by eldest Divya Singh took to the floor at various points in the match.

Earlier in the morning, Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) and South East Central Railway Bilaspur won easily to stay undefeated after the league stages and top their respective pools.

The league stages have now concluded and the four best teams in the men’s and women’s sections will lock horns in the semifinals starting tomorrow. As Pool A toppers, ONGC will face Pool B runners up Punjab tomorrow evening. Southern Railway, Chennai women will battle neighbour Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) Thiruvananthapuram.

(In the largely unoffocial three point shootout, Rajasthan’s players won in both the men’s and women’s sections)
