Teams from Punjab came out firing today to go through to the semifinals of the annual Inter Zonal All India University Championship for Men underway at the Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi. North Zone and defending All India Champs Punjab University Chandigarh progressed to the last four with ease, beating Chhattisgarh side Pt R. S. University Raipur 79-48. Their superior size and overall skill level allowed them to dominate their opponents after a close first quarter. Punjab University will now play GNDU Amritsar in the first semifinal tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 pm.

In one of the best matches of the tournament so far, Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar beat heavyweights, University of Madras, 73-70. Navalpreet scored 36 huge points to take his side to the upset victory. Last year’s runners up, Madras, could be accused of displaying a touch of complacency in the first half, and by the time their former junior international S Karthickeyan got his offense going, it was too little too late.

In other quarterfinals, south teams Hindustan University Madras and Jain University Bangalore won their respective matches to set up a semifinal clash between them tomorrow evening at 5:00pm.
