Press Release: Strong title contenders ONGC (Oil & Natural Gas Corporation), Uttarakhand and IOB (Indian Overseas Bank), Tamil Nadu, both easily won their respective men’s semi-final league matches in the UPL-9th Savio Cup All-India Basketball Tournament, sponsored by Tridhaatu Realty and Indian Oil and being organized by the Don Bosco Recreation Centre.

Federation Cup champions ONGC, aiming to regain the title, cruised to a comfortable 78-57 victory against a jaded Services in their opening semi-final match, at the floodlit Don Bosco High School courts, Matunga on Thursday evening. ONGC, who last won the title in 2012, enjoyed a 46-27 lead at the end of the first half.

ONGC were far too superior for the armymen as they totally dominated the first three quarters to establish a commanding 21 points lead, which proved sufficient for them to complete the win without much ado.

Vishesh Bhriguvanshi and Amritpal Singh led the ONGC charge scoring 21 and 20 points respectively. Seasoned campaigner Sambhaji Kadam waged a lone battle for Services and managed to score 11 points.

Earlier in the first encounter, the Tamil Nadu team steam-rolled past a lacklustre Punjab, winning by a handsome 81-51 margin. The fitter and more energetic IOB outfit showed good understanding and were better organized in both attack and defence. They rotated the ball cleverly among themselves and had no problems in finding the hoop regularly to keep the scoreboard ticking. The Punjab side tried their best to get past the compact IOB defence. But they lacked accuracy and were often beaten to the ball by the IOB defenders who were alert under the defensive board.

The leading players for IOB were Amjyot Singh (26 points) and P. Venkatesh (24 points). Palpreet Singh scored 11 for Punjab in the losing effort.
