Press Release: Federation Cup runners-up Maharashtra succumbed to a 71-81 margin of defeat against an upbeat Kerala in the opening women’s league match of the UPL-9th Savio Cup Basketball Tournament, sponsored by Tridhaatu Realty and Indian Oil and being organized by the Don Bosco Recreation Centre, at the floodlit Don Bosco High School courts, Matunga on Saturday evening.
The winners enjoyed a 42-32 lead at the half-way stage and were well-served by P.S. Jeena, who top-scored with 38points and Pooja Mol 20 points. Skipper Manisha Dange with 28 points was the main scorer for Maharashtra, while Reenu Maurya got 17 points.
Kerala took time to settle down and trailed 11-6 initially. But once they got into their stride they turned things around and gradually snatched the lead at 16-13 by the end of the first quarter. Thereafter, the Kerala girls continued to hold sway and with some steady scoring raced to a healthy 42-32 lead by the end of the second quarter.
Maharashtra, who lost to Chattisgarh in the Fed Cup final last Thursday, were let down by some poor shooting and they were also not sharp under the offensive board as they failed to pick up the rebounds and put pressure on their opponents.
The state girls showed some kind of urgency in the final quarter scoring 24 points as 15 by their rivals, but it was a little too late.
Results – Women’s league: Kerala 81 (P.S. Jeena 38, Pooja Mol 20) beat Maharashtra 71 (Manisha Dange 28, Reenu 17).
