Press Release/Ahmedabad 8th Jan, 2014: The women from Maharashtra were at their destructive best as they beat Delhi 89-49  in the semifinals of the 28th Federation Cup National Basketball Championship. Maharashtra fill now face an equally good opponent Chhattisgarh in the clash for top honours.

Maharashtra Captain Manisha Dange scored 20 points, Shireen Limaye 19 and Renu Maurya finished with 17 which included three 3 pointers for her team. Madhu Kumari scored 15, Neha Joshi 11, and Sarvanta added 10 for Delhi.

Chattisgarh, with the 6ft 9 Poonam Chaturvedi on their side were invincible as they went on to beat Kerala 80-57. Poonam with 26 points scored a double- double with 19 rebounds and 11 field goals with ease, using her tall stature to her advantage. All her team needed to do was get the ball to her. Anju Lakra scored 20 and Pushpa M added 14 for the Chhattisgarh side. They both scored two 3 pointers for Chhattisgarh. Jeeena Skaria scored 22 and Stephy Nixon added 11 for Kerala.

The ONGC men felt the heat as the Army Red team led by the experienced Sambaji Kadam made them sweat throughout. Army Red had come into the knock out stage from Pool B after winning their ties against Kerala (Central Excise) and Rajasthan (Sikar District). Both teams were matched basket for basket and every time ONGC managed to take a lead, Army Red would come back with spectacular performance, driving through ONGC’s tall defence, bringing down the lead.

The game was tied on 41 with 5 min for end of 3rd period. The Army team managed one point lead at the end of 3rd quarter. The experienced ONGC side came back in the game in the fourth quarter with 21 points. Army Red failed to convert chances that they had created in the last quarter and only managed 5 points. Vishesh Bhriguvanshi scored 20 points and Trideep Rai added 17 which included two 3 pointers. Yadwinder Singh scored 11 and converted 2 free throws out of three for ONGC. Amritpal Singh had a double-double for ONGC with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Gopal Ram scored 15 points, Jairam Jat 11 and Captain Sambaji Kadam finished with 10 for Army Red.

Tamil Nadu (IOB) registered a 61-58 win over Punjab (Border Security Force). Sivabalan G and Amjyot Singh finished with double-double for IOB. Sivabalan G scored 15 with 10 rebounds and Amjyot scored 10 with 11 rebounds. Prasanna Venkatesh added 11 for IOB. Davinder Hooda scored 24 and Vinod Kumar added 14 for Border Security Force.
