Press Release/Mumbai 9th Dec 2013: Vidyaniketan girls from Dombivili were coming from 3 straight victories and they needed another win to keep their momentum going in the 2013-14 BFI-IMG Reliance School Basketball League, but the girls from home team St. Anthony’s, Chembur had a different plan for their opponents. The game was probably evenly contested in the first quarter where St. Anthony’s was leading by just a margin of 3 points (7-4), but as the game progressed, the difference was apparent. By half time the girls from St Anthony’s had gained an unassailable lead of 13 points with the score reading 25-13 in their favour. Vidyaniketan tried to make a comeback of sorts in the 3rd period out scoring their opponents 10-4 but St. Anthony’s peaked at the right time to outscore their girls from Dombivili to edge their opponents 32-23. Sheryl with 13 points was the top scorer for St. Anthony’s and Rutvi Lotlikar with 9 points top scored for Vidyaniketan.
In the boy’s Group A, Fr. Agnel’s kept their momentum going by winning their 5th encounter in a row. They have beaten all the teams in their group by huge margins. They had a bit of a challenge from Hansraj Morarji Public School, Andheri as Hansraj was the only team to lose to Fr. Agnel’s by a single digit margin.
Fr. Agnel had an excellent start supported by their forward Vaishakh who had a game high 29 points in the game. By the end of the 3rd period, it looked like Fr. Agnel’s would have an easy outing but the Hansraj boys had some enrgy left to push Fr. Agnel’s in the 4th period. Hansraj outscored Fr. Agnel’s 33-22 in the 4th period. With the difference too much to cover Fr. Agnel’s won the game 67-59. Bhomish Patel had 19 points and Shivam Shivekar had 16 points for Hansraj. Varun and Rohan scored 15 points apiece for Fr. Agnel’s.
In the other group, D J Doshi Gurukul High School, Ghatkopar East has won four games on the trot to top pool B. They have beaten Singhania School, Thane, Children’s Academy, Malad and Smt. Sulochana Devi Singhania School Thane twice. Being the division champions of the District Sports Office games held recently, they are certainly expected to reach the finals of the 2013-14 BFI-IMG Reliance School Basketball League.

About BFI-IMG Reliance School Basketball LeagueBFI in collaboration with the IMG Reliance and State Basketball Associations organize the BFI-IMG Reliance School Basketball League each year across India to help develop a structured, pan-India School League, which will serve as the platform to increase organized basketball participation at grassroots level. The 2013-14 edition of the BFI-IMG Reliance School League will include 2 new cities – Indore and Hyderabad – in addition to last year’s returning 6 cities New Delhi, Mumbai, Indore, Ludhiana, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bangalore and Chennai. The school winners from all the states will participate in the National Champions Cup to be held in April/May, 2014 in New Delhi. The leagues will comprise of 20 teams per city (10 boys & 10 girls). A total of 1,920 kids and 160 teams will be participating across the country. Each team will play a total of 8 games over a period of 2 months and a total of 640 games will be played during the group stage, which will be followed with a knockout tournament to crown a City Champion. Games will be held at rotating locations in different schools & colleges to provide any institution the opportunity to host the league. One of the main goals of the School League is to start the first pan-India League, as opposed to the current system of competition – tournaments. As part of the 2013-14 School League, BFI and IMG Reliance have put aside money for each participating School for refurbishments of their home courts. With the help of the State Basketball Association, BFI and IMG Reliance hopes this initiative will incentivize schools to invest in basketball. |
